South Tyrol's figure skating: Next step as the most difficult

Manuel Piazza As a true Val Gardena native, Manuel Piazza is naturally used to cold temperatures. But this season, the 23-year-old is going one step further, as the pair skater has been competing for the Icelandic association together with Júlia Sylvía Gunnarsdóttir since autumn this year. The third-place finisher at the 2024 Italian Championships is also writing a small chapter in figure skating history, as an Icelandic pair will be represented in international competitions in this discipline for the first time. This means that the doors to the next European and World Championships are open for Piazza, who discovered pair skating for himself a good four years ago.

Anna Pezzetta At 17, Anna Pezzetta is one of the up-and-coming talents in South Tyrol. The Bozen native began her sporting career at the Young Goose Academy Neumarkt club and moved her training facility near Milan last season. With her enormous jump height, the Bozen native is already attracting a lot of attention on the international stage and is a potential candidate for quadruple jumps in the women's competition. As third place in the last Italian championship, Pezzetta certainly has the potential to attract attention this season with her overall package of athleticism and elegance.

Maurizio Zandron Maurizio Zandron is probably the most experienced figure skater in South Tyrol and, at 32, can look back on a long career. After starting out in South Tyrol, the Bozen native moved to the Austrian association a few years ago and has since won 5 national titles there. But Maurizio Zandron has staying power not only in sport, but also in his academic career. He successfully completed his economics degree with the state exam just last September. But before he heads out into the world of work, Zandron wants to stay true to the ice at least for this season. With his new coach Sergei Rozanov, the Austrian-born skater has brought a breath of fresh air into his daily training routine and wants to continue testing his limits on the ice.

Marco Zandron By taking part in the Olympic Games in Beijing two years ago and finishing 11th, the man from Bolzano fulfilled a big dream. However, a prohibited substance was found, presumably due to contamination of a cream that was found on his then partner Laura Barquero, and brought an abrupt end to his career - for now. After a one-year break during which the 2-year-old devoted himself to studying economics, the younger of the Zandron brothers is now back. With his new partner Brooke McIntosh, he will be competing under the Spanish flag again this season and wants to give it one more try. The goal: the 22 Olympic Games in Milan Cortina.
