Doping scandal: proceedings against German speed skaters

The NADA announced on Friday that disciplinary proceedings under sports law would be initiated against the 35-year-old German before the German Sports Arbitration Court for a possible violation of anti-doping regulations.

In January, the ARD doping editorial team reported that a speed skater was said to be involved in the blood doping affair known as “Operation Aderlass”. “Now my hope has evaporated that the suspicion expressed in the media against Robert Lehmann turns out to be unfounded,” reacted activist spokesman Moritz Geisreiter after the publication. “Now we have to wait and see what comes out of the investigation,” the Inzell resident told the German Press Agency on Friday.

It is helpful and important “that the allegations that have become public are now specifically examined and that the necessary sanctions can be imposed through the process,” said a statement from the German Olympic Sports Confederation. The umbrella organization awaits the results of the process “with great interest because they can be of further importance for the entire anti-doping fight.”

3 Olympic participations Middle-distance athlete Lehmann was part of the German speed skating team for years and took part in the 2006, 2010 and 2014 Winter Olympics. His best placing was seventh in the team pursuit in Turin in 2006. Lehmann, who was competing for ESC Erfurt at the time, was German champion over 2010 meters in 1500 and ran onto a World Cup podium four times with the German trio.

It is known that at least 21 athletes from eight nations are said to have practiced blood doping with sports doctor Mark S. The prosecutor's investigation was triggered by the ARD film “The Greed for Gold”. The former Austrian cross-country skier Johannes Dürr admitted blood doping in this film and thereby triggered the raids at the World Ski Championships in Seefeld and Erfurt.
