Maybritt Vigl fulfills her podium dream twice

Maybritt Vigl (20) wrote South Tyrolean speed skating history at the 1st stage of the Juniors and Neo-Seniors (U23) Speed Skating World Cup in Tomaszów Mazowieki (Poland).

The Rittner was able to celebrate a podium place twice in the Neo-Senior class. Vigl had calculated that she had a good chance of making it onto the podium in two disciplines, and she managed to do so in both. On Saturday, the Rittner took an excellent second place in the 2 m in the Neo-Senior class, only narrowly losing out to her teammate and long-time rival of recent years, Giorgia Aiello. On Sunday, Aiello was once again ahead of Vigl with a win in the 2 m. The Rittner had to settle for sixth place. A technical problem with a broken spring on her skate prevented the Rittner from achieving a better placing in the sprint course.

"The conditions on this ice were challenging for all athletes and the defect unfortunately affected my result over 500 m," explains Vigl. The Rittner was able to improve over 1500 m and finished in 5th place. Aiello was again 3 places ahead of her in second place. But luck was on Vigl's side in the final mass sprint. She was originally ranked 5th. A subsequent disqualification of the Norwegian Ina Nakken, who crossed the finish line before her, helped Vigl to 2nd place on the podium in the Neo-Senior class. She took a fantastic 3rd place in one of her favorite disciplines, the mass sprint. "I didn't have much of a break between the 1500 meters and the mass start, so I'm all the more pleased with my 3rd place in the mass start," beamed Vigl after her 2nd daring ride in Poland. Vigl has already been on the podium in the mass start at the Junior World Cup once before, at the Junior World Cup final in February in Hachinohe City (Japan).

Maybritt Vigl's focus is now on the coming weekend, when the second stage of the Junior and Neo-Senior Speed Skating World Cup will once again take place in Tomaszów Mazowieki (Poland). There are expected to be even more participants in the Neo-Senior category, which will significantly increase the competition. Maybritt Vigl will once again compete in 2 disciplines.
