50km: Hans Christer Holund takes gold

Before half the distance, Hans Christer Holund broke away from the rest of the field and completed his laps alone on the World Championship course in Seefeld. The Norwegian went into the second half with a lead of almost 23 seconds. After 40 kilometers, Holund was almost a minute ahead of the Russian Alexander Bolshunov, who was now able to pull away from the field of pursuers.

After 1:49:59,3 hours, Hans Christer Holund crossed the finish line and grabbed the gold medal. Holund has not yet won a World Cup race and thus secured a Norwegian gold medal in the last men's race of this World Cup. For Holund, Olympic bronze medalist in the Pyeongchang 2018 skiathlon, it was the first World Cup medal ever.

Bolshunov, who started the 50km race as a substitute, was 27,8 seconds behind at the finish. The Russian will probably end his career. The bronze medal went to Sjur Roethe (NOR), who beat Martin Johnsrud Sundby (NOR) by a shoe's length in the finish sprint.

The best “Azzurro” is Francesco De Fabiani in 14th place, 1:12,1 minutes behind.
