Cross-country skiing has been an integral part of Schaad's life since early childhood. "Cross-country skiing has been a part of my life ever since I could walk," the athlete wrote on Instagram.
His parents introduced him to the sport, and over time it developed into a passion that allowed him to compete at the top of the world.
Setbacks and injuries
But the Swiss's career was repeatedly plagued by injuries. His knee, in particular, caused him problems. Ironically, it was also a knee injury that led him to his professional career in 2013. Now, it's another knee injury that will determine his future path. "But now my body has shown me one last time that there are limits, even when my head is still full of dreams," explained Schaad. His path wasn't easy, but despite setbacks, he kept coming back. In the year of his World Cup debut in 2013, the Swiss managed to snag a silver medal at the Swiss Championships in Sedrun. Three years later, Schaad even won gold. However, major successes on the international stage eluded him. Now, the time has come for the 31-year-old to take a new path. "The passion to push the boundaries is no longer as strong as it used to be. That's why it's time to take new paths and end my career as a professional cross-country skier," said the Swiss.
Thanks to his pioneers
In his farewell speech, he thanked everyone who had accompanied him on his journey: coaches, companions, friends, and family. "This path was not something I took for granted. You made little Roman's dream possible, and for that I am deeply grateful." With these words, Roman Schaad bids farewell to the cross-country skiing world. Where his new path will lead him remains to be seen – but one thing is certain: his name will be remembered in Swiss cross-country skiing.
