Cross-country skiing: Niskanen triumphs in the “marathon”

Pyeongchang (SID) Cross-country skier Iivo Niskanen won gold in the 50 km at the Pyeongchang Winter Games and gave Finland its first Olympic victory in South Korea. The 26-year-old, who won gold in the team sprint in Sochi four years ago, won the “marathon” after 2:08:22,1 hours. Niskanen pulled up one kilometer from the finish, Alexander Bolshunov could not respond and, 18,7 seconds behind, missed the second triumph for the Olympic athletes from Russia (OAR) in Pyeongchang. Andrej Larkow (OAR/+2:37,5 minutes) secured bronze. As expected, the German participants had nothing to do with the decision. Andreas Katz (Baiersbronn) was the best DSV starter in 5th place, 10,2:14 minutes behind, with Thomas Bing (Dermbach/30th) and Lucas Bögl (Gaißach/46th) finishing further back. Jonas Dobler (Traunstein) got out. "With a 50 like that, you have to take your hat off to everyone who gets through. The whole thing is just tough as hell," said Katz at Eurosport and was looking forward to "a wheat beer and the bed." It was Bolshunov's fourth medal in South Korea; he had previously won silver in the relay and team sprint as well as bronze in the sprint.
