Severely injured: German winter sportswoman out of season

Nordic combined athlete Maria Gerboth has to miss the entire World Cup season due to injury.

According to the German Ski Association, the 23-year-old suffered a complex injury to her left knee on Sunday at the Summer Grand Prix in Chaux-Neuve, France, including a torn anterior cruciate ligament. She underwent surgery in Munich the following day, and the procedure was successful and without complications.

Gerboth, who finished tenth in the overall World Cup last season and was the second-best German Nordic combined athlete behind Nathalie Armbruster, will be out for the entire coming winter. "When Maria can return to training therapy and sport-specific training depends on her healing and rehabilitation progress," said team doctor Lukas Pecher. "Our long-term comeback plan covers a period of twelve months."
