Over and over: two experienced skiers quit

We're talking about Leif Kristian Nestvold-Haugen and Trevor Philip. The 35-year-old Norwegian made his debut in the World Cup back in 2009 and celebrated great successes in his career: in 2017, for example, he won bronze in the giant slalom at the World Championships in St. Moritz. A year later, he grabbed the silver medal in the team event at the Pyeongchang Olympics. In total, Nestvold-Haugen took part in 210 World Cup races and reached the podium three times. But it was never enough to win. In 2017 he only had to admit defeat to a certain Marcel Hirscher in Kranjska Gora.

The Norwegian chose not to send a long farewell message, but his teammates paid tribute to him. “Thank you for being a great leader for our team,” wrote Lucas Braathen. “We will miss you every day.” Aleksander Aamodt Kilde and Aksel Lund Svindal also praised the giant slalom specialist as a great role model.

Not a last race for Philip Just like Nestvold-Haugen, 30-year-old Philp felt most comfortable in the core discipline of skiing. But the Canadians didn't have any big successes. In total he took part in 153 World Cup races, with a 5th place being his best result. Philp had to cut short this season after a crash in Cortina d'Ampezzo before he announced his retirement.

“After this season, it’s time for me to start a new chapter in life,” he wrote on social media. “I did my best to be back at the start in Kranjska Gora. I wanted to do one last race. The team around me was fantastic and we almost made it, but unfortunately my leg isn't quite ready yet." So he watched the last race from the finish. He still wanted to enjoy it – “even if I didn’t drive it,” says Philp.

As the end of the season approaches, resignations are increasing in the ski circus. After the race weekend in Kranjska Gora, two veterans decided to end their careers.
