Federica Brignone is currently on cloud nine. After a highly successful World Championship in Saalbach, where she won the gold medal in the giant slalom and silver in the super-G, the 34-year-old achieved another moment of success when she returned to everyday World Cup life in Sestriere. Not far from the French border in the western Italian Alps, Brignone celebrated her 15th victory in the giant slalom - even though the ski queen was a little under the weather.

In the week before the race, Brignone was battling an illness and even went into the home race with antibiotics in her system. Despite this, the Azzurra is currently showing a certain composure that is giving her competitors a run for their money. "Today was a hard day. I did everything I could to rest and recover 100%. I don't think I've ever been forced to stay at home and do nothing for six days in my entire life," said the day's winner, commenting on the circumstances of her success.

Her performance seemed unaffected by the weak phase. Brignone took 0,40 seconds off second-placed Alice Robinson, while Thea Louise Stjernesund in third place was already 1,57 seconds behind. In her career, the 34-year-old has made it to the podium an incredible 78 times. She is still ten podium finishes away from the great Alberto Tomba with 88 podium places - who was among the enthusiastic spectators, by the way - a number that does not seem all that great in her current form.

But Brignone is modest: "Tomba is still ten podium places away? Oh come on, I'll never make it. I already told Alberto that."
