After the surprising separation from her husband Marcus Höfl at the beginning of August, Maria Höfl-Riesch has now spoken for the first time about the reasons behind her separation. In an emotional interview with "Gala", the 39-year-old explained how she came to the decision after 13 years of marriage.

"Of course I'm very sad, a separation like this is painful, but these things happen," admitted the three-time Olympic champion. There was no specific reason for the end of the marriage, rather she and Marcus "slowly but steadily grew apart." For Höfl-Riesch it was particularly important that the separation was "loving and respectful." "We had such a great time together, so we are parting ways in friendship," she stressed.

Maria Höfl-Riesch is planning a break at Lake Garda to clear her head and get her bearings. "I'm going there with my sister, I want to clear my head and focus on myself," she revealed. In August, the couple announced their decision on social media. In a joint statement, they said: "After careful consideration and with a heavy heart, we have decided to go our separate ways in the future."

Although the former winter sports dream couple are now going their separate ways privately, everything will remain the same on a professional level: Marcus Höfl will continue to work as manager for his ex-wife. In the near future, there are already joint public appearances that the two want to manage together. "We will manage it together," says Höfl-Riesch confidently.
