The great redemption of Sofia Goggia

Sofia Goggia had been waiting for a World Cup victory since January 18th – that is, for about 11 months. On Sunday, the Italian finally broke her drought in the Super-G in Val d'Isère.

Sofia Goggia has stood on a World Cup podium six times since her last victory in the Cortina downhill. Now the 33-year-old has finally returned to the top step of the podium. After a disappointing downhill run the previous day, the Bergamasque skier delivered a perfect run in Sunday's Super-G, beating the in-form New Zealander Alice Robinson by 15 hundredths of a second.

Lindsey Vonn finished third, just as she had in the downhill. It was the 41-year-old American's first podium finish of the Super-G season. Vonn was understandably pleased at the finish line this time – as was her coach, Aksel Lund Svindal. On Sunday, Vonn will be able to smile from the podium alongside her good friend Goggia. The two shared a warm embrace at the finish. Elena Curtoni, another Italian skier, finished fourth.

The South Tyrolean skiers Sara Thaler, Nicol, and Nadia Delago have not yet started. The women's Ski World Cup continues between Christmas and New Year's. A giant slalom and a slalom are scheduled in Semmering on December 27th and 28th.
