A German woman crashes Vonn's second party

Lindsey Vonn's second sensation was already in the air, but a German youngster thwarted the superstar's plans.

In the finish area, Lindsey Vonn roared with joy, one day after their sensational triumph Everything seemed set in St. Moritz for the next blockbuster success of the American superstar. However, just two minutes later, her name had been knocked off the top spot on the scoreboard – by another unexpected high-flyer. Emma Aicher beat the veteran by 0,24 seconds; the 22-year-old German was particularly unbeatable in the final section.


Reaching a top speed of 114 km/h, the German skier Aicher stormed to her third World Cup victory. She secured her first two wins last March in Kvitfjell (downhill) and La Thuile (Super-G). Sofia Goggia, surprisingly unable to match this speed – the Italian was almost 6 km/h slower in the final sector – nevertheless fought her way to third place (+0,29). The 33-year-old was thus delighted with her first podium finish of the season.

For the South Tyrolean sisters Nicol and Nadia Delago, their second appearance this World Cup winter was less successful. In the final standings, Nicol finished in 33rd place (+2,19) and Nadia in 38th (+2,28). Sara Thaler from Ortisei followed closely behind (41st/+2,85), while Vicky Bernardi from Badia only managed 49th place (+3,32). However, the Italian team had another top result to celebrate with Laura Pirovano (6th/+0,76), in addition to Goggia.
