A Confederate ensures a surprise victory at home

Priska Nufer had already shown her potential at yesterday's World Cup downhill in Switzerland in Ester Ledecká’s victory narrowly missed the podium. It was her best World Cup result to date. On Sunday, the 30-year-old went one better and celebrated her first World Cup victory. She was particularly convincing in the technical middle section. At the finish she was loudly welcomed by the home fans as the new leader. Nobody should come close to her best time.

Ledecká ended up in second place, 2 seconds behind the surprise winner, in the second World Cup downhill this weekend in Crans-Montana. Azzurra Sofia Goggia also had reason to celebrate, taking third place (+0,11 seconds) and staying just ahead of her competitor in the battle for the downhill World Cup, Corinne Suter.

This means that a preliminary decision has probably been made: Before the last Downhill World Cup on March 16th in Courchevel, France, Goggia now has 482 points in his account, while Suter has 407 points. Even if Suter wins, a top 10 place in the last race would be enough for Goggia to win the small crystal ball. Suter has to be at least in the top two in Courchevel to have any chance of overall victory. If the Swiss came second, a place in the top 2 would be enough for Goggia (only the top 2 receive World Cup points in the final).

Federica Brignone also made it into the top 10 with 7th place. The 24-year-old Nadia Delago from Wolkenstein had a hard time, couldn't find the optimal line in the curved part and had to settle for 21st place. Her sister Nicol started with the fastest time, but after just a few goals she got too far on the outside ski after a shot, then missed a goal and was eliminated. Her disappointment was evident. Karoline Pichler from Petersberg, who started the race with starting number 48, made it into the top 28 points in 30th place. Seconds of shock after a fall There were moments of shock when Cornelia Hütter fell. Shortly before the final jump, the Austrian fell backwards, turned to her side in the air and fell upon landing. When he hit the hard track, Hütter hit the ground hard. Fortunately, the woman from Vorarlberg got back on her feet again.
