Men's European Cup races have been held in Reinswald since 2007 and no athlete from Austria has ever been able to prevail in the supreme discipline of alpine skiing. This series came to an end on Wednesday with the victory of Florian Scheiber, who set a new course record in 2.10,45:3650 minutes on the XNUMX meter long and well-prepared Plankenhorn piste in imperial weather.

“It hasn't always been easy for me over the past two years, with a lot of injuries that have set me back. At the moment things are going great for me again. I'm very happy that I was finally able to win in Reinswald. My thanks go to my service man who prepared great skis for me,” said the beaming winner Florian Scheiber in the finish area.

For Scheiber it was the first downhill victory in the European Cup this season, after he had celebrated three victories in the Super-G since the turn of the year (in Meribel and twice in Santa Caterina Valfurva) and came second in the downhill once (Altenmarkt-Zauchensee). For Scheiber it was his sixth victory in the European Cup, his second in the descent to Bansko (Bulgaria) in 2008.

The 24-year-old Scheiber - he comes from Sölden and was part of the A squad of the Austrian national team until last season - finished 0,09 seconds ahead of his compatriot Frederic Berthold, who shared second place with the Swiss Ralph Weber. Johannes Kröll (also Austria) came fourth, 0,11 seconds behind. Kröll has won three downhills this season. Josef Ferstl (Germany) and Manuel Kramer (Austria) shared fifth place (+0,13).

Staudacher's best "Azzurro" The Austrian team was the benchmark at the start of the three races in Reinswald, as six athletes from the ÖSV team ended up in the top ten. The best “Azzurro” was Patrick Staudacher, who finished eleventh in 2.11,22:2007. “Staudi”, the XNUMX Super-G world champion, even won the downhill once three years ago.

“I'm very happy with the trip, it was really tough driving with great weather conditions. The wind may have played a small role at the top. I was doing great until the middle of the race, but then I lost a little time at the bottom,” analyzed Patrick Staudacher.

The European Cup week in Reinswald continues on Thursday with the super combination. The descent begins at 10 a.m., the slalom three hours later. On Friday, the event in the Sarnen ski area traditionally ends with the Super-G.
