Wendy Holdener competed in her 307th World Cup race, the slalom in Courchevel. But something like what happened on Tuesday was likely unprecedented for the Swiss skier: As the star skier crossed the finish line after her first run, she lost control of her skis due to a bump in the snow. Holdener tumbled spectacularly and then crashed into the advertising boards at high speed.
After a few anxious seconds, during which the 54-time podium finisher seemed disoriented, Holdener got back on her feet and trudged – somewhat shaken – out of the finish area. Despite this shock, the Swiss skier started in the second run and ultimately finished seventh. "I still need to process all of this," Holdener told reporters after the race. FRS.
However, the scene shows that the Swiss women's ski team is not having much luck this year. With Lara Gut-Behrami (torn cruciate ligament) and Michelle Gisin (spinal surgery and torn cruciate ligament), two superstars are out for the rest of the season, and Corinne Suter is currently sidelined with a muscle injury and a knee contusion.
Shiffrin towers above everyone
But back to Courchevel, where Mikaela Shiffrin once again put on a spectacular show. After the first run, the American led by 83 hundredths of a second, and in the second run, she crossed the finish line a full 1,55 seconds ahead of second-place Camille Rast. For Shiffrin, it's her fourth victory in four slalom races this season – and each time she's won by more than a second.Mikaela Shiffrin put on a great show. © APA/afp / JEFF PACHOUD
Emma Aicher also caused a stir: The 22-year-old German had only won the downhill in St. Moritz on Saturday and now – three days later – raced onto the podium in third place in the slalom in Courchevel. Click here for the race report.
