Bad Kitzbühel crash: Fears for ski superstar

A terrible scene occurred in the Super-G in Kitzbühel. A skiing superstar had to be transported by helicopter after a heavy fall.

The Streif in Kitzbühel has already shown its claws in training this year and has left two injured, the Austrian Felix Hacker and the German Jacob Schramm. Now a prominent victim has been added. Alexis Pinturault had a bad fall in the Super-G on Friday and had to be taken to hospital by helicopter. The Frenchman's knee was apparently affected.

Pinturault, of all people, must have been on the minds of many ski fans on Friday. The former overall World Cup winner tore his cruciate ligament in Wengen just a year ago and was out for months. This year, Pinturault wanted to slowly get back into the World Cup, but now he is facing another long break.

On Friday, Pinturault lost his balance on a treacherous trough, got tangled up at a gate and then fell. The Frenchman wanted to get up immediately, but noticed that something was wrong and sat down again - with the help of the paramedics who had rushed to the scene. The knee made an unnatural movement during the fall. A helicopter had to be called and the 33-year-old was taken to hospital.

Shortly after the Pinturault crash, a second helicopter was used in Kitzbühel: Florian Loriot, another Frenchman, was caught in the same place as Pinturault. Loriot was unable to get up and also had to be airlifted to hospital. The race was won by Marco Odermatt. Click here for the report.
