Bassino shines in the Super-G: next World Cup gold for Italy

Bassino had already been doing well in the Combined Super-G on Monday until her retirement. On Wednesday she brought her new fast ride to the finish and was crowned world champion in the Super-G in fantastic conditions in the French Alps. Curiously, Bassino has never been at the top of this discipline in the World Cup. For the 26-year-old, it is the second World Cup gold after Cortina 2021, when she won the parallel race.

Bassino actually lost a lot of time in the upper part of the technically demanding course on Wednesday. After the slide was over, Bassino showed her class and ran away from the competition, especially in the final part. In the end, the lady from Cuneo prevailed eleven hundredths of a second ahead of Mikaela Shiffrin.

Shiffrin was also very happy with the silver medal after she was eliminated in a dramatic way in the combined event. The 27-year-old American won her twelfth World Cup medal and her third in the Super-G. The exceptional athlete has already won a full set of medals in this speed discipline - amazing.

Double redemption via bronze Two athletes, Cornelia Hütter and Kajsa Vickhoff Lie, were able to celebrate bronze. It is the first World Cup medal for both the 30-year-old Austrian and the 24-year-old Norwegian. Both have thought about ending their careers in the past because of their serious injuries. Now Hütter and Lie can celebrate bronze together.

Other favorites such as defending champion Lara Gut-Behrami (6th) and Federica Brignone (8th) fell short of expectations on Wednesday. The other Azzurre, Sofia Goggia and Elena Curtoni, took 11th and 15th place. The World Cup in France continues on Thursday (11.30 a.m.) with the men's Super-G. In contrast to the women's race, two South Tyroleans, Christof Innerhofer and Dominik Paris, will also be there.
