Freddy Carrick Smith made up a remarkable 20 places in the second run, racing to a completely unexpected victory. The surprise contender took almost two seconds off the halfway leader, Hans Grahl, who was relegated to second place – and Grahl's jubilation in the finish area was correspondingly immense.
Tobias Kastlunger was also able to celebrate scoring more points in the second-highest racing series. The World Cup veteran from Val Badia, who recently reached the European Cup podium twice in Zinal, finished in sixth place, exactly the same position he held at the halfway point of the race.
The second-best Azzurro was Simon Talacci, who dropped from second to ninth place in the final. Hannes Zingerle (Abtei) and Max Clara (St. Vigil) finished in 28th and 40th place, respectively.
