Kilde on Shiffrin: “I thought she didn’t want me”

They have been the dream couple in the ski scene for three years now: Aleksander Aamodt Kilde and Mikaela Shiffrin. But how exactly did the spark between the two? Kilde now speaks plainly - and says: "I didn't have the feeling that she wanted a relationship with me."

He is one of the best skiers of today, she is the best skier of all time: Aleksander Aamodt Kilde and Mikaela Shiffrin form a true dream couple in the scene. But how exactly did the two of them get to know each other? In an interview with the Swiss View Kilde gives intimate insights.

“I first met Mikaela during a training camp in Portillo, Chile. I really liked it straight away. But because she was only 16 at the time and I was 19, the time was not yet ripe for a romantic relationship. But I sent her a friend request on Facebook immediately after that encounter,” Kilde tells the View.

A stroke of fate as a turning point

The contact remained in the following years, albeit superficially. That only changed after a stroke of fate that Shiffrin suffered: her father died at the beginning of 2020. “After this stroke of fate, I sent Mikaela a long message. I wrote to her that I would be there for her at any time if she wanted to talk to me,” says Kilde. From now on the feeling between the two was completely different. “From that point on we had more and more contact. And it quickly became clear to me that I wanted to have a romantic relationship with this wonderful woman. But somehow I had the feeling that she didn’t want that.”

Fortunately, that was a false impression that Kilde had gotten. Because suddenly Shiffrin came towards him. “Suddenly she confessed to me that she was interested in a relationship with me. And then she asked me if I was interested too. Of course, I said yes straight away.” The two have been a couple ever since – a successful and overjoyed one at that.
