Torn cruciate ligament: Bitter diagnosis after World Cup crash

A fall in the giant slalom at the Ski World Championships in Saalbach-Hinterglemm had more serious consequences than initially feared.

It is a bitter setback for Clarisse Brèche: The 23-year-old Frenchwoman suffered a serious knee injury at the World Championships in Saalbach-Hinterglemm. In the giant slalom on Thursday, she fell in a left turn in the first run. Although she was able to get up, she was unable to put any weight on her right leg. The diagnosis is harsh: cruciate ligament tear.

The scene on the slopes was dramatic. Brèche was visibly struggling with the pain while she was being cared for by first responders. She later posted on social media with depressed words and confirmed the end of the season: "Those were the last turns of this incredible and crazy season... Hard, hard and hard or cruel."

The coming months will be marked by rehabilitation and patience. If an operation is necessary, there is a risk of several months off. For the already struggling French team, this is the latest bad news after their mixed performances at this World Cup.
