Lindsey Vonn mourns: “It will never be the same again”

Alpine skier Lindsey Vonn is mourning the loss of her dog Lucy. The animal, which had traveled with the American for years during the Ski World Cup, died on Sunday, the 40-year-old athlete announced.

"There will never be enough words to describe how much I love her, and my heart will never be the same without her," Vonn wrote on Instagram. The extroverted athlete first took Lucy on her travels as a puppy during the 2015/16 season and subsequently frequently appeared with the little dog at press events and even on winners' podiums.

Nine years ago, Vonn said she always felt lonely on her many trips and had been taking antidepressants for a long time. That's precisely why she was so happy to have her dog waiting for her in her hotel room, "glad to see me, regardless of whether I won or not. And I need that."

Even a TV show

"We've traveled the world together, skied, hiked, biked, explored, floated down waterfalls, gone on hot air balloon rides, gone to the Olympics... we've had so many incredible adventures together and made so many memories that I'm incredibly happy to share them with her," Vonn wrote. "We even had our own TV show!"

The 2010 Olympic champion, two-time world champion and 82-time World Cup winner thanked the veterinarians for caring for Lucy all these years and especially in the last few days.

Second dog is doing better after cancer

Vonn also has an older dog who recently had to undergo chemotherapy for cancer. Her "big boy" Leo is doing better. He's still fit at 12 years old, Vonn wrote. "Everything's back to how it started... just me and Leo. I'm grateful I still have him."

Many current and former ski racers expressed their condolences under the Instagram post, including Felix Neureuther, Mikaela Shiffrin and Sofia Goggia.
