Marta Bassino and the tragic phone call that changed everything

There are places that a skier will remember forever. For Marta Bassino, one of them is the Norwegian Kvitfjell. But not because she celebrated glorious victories there or won major titles. In fact, she had to experience one of the saddest hours there.

A year ago, Bassino got a call in the far north that pulled the rug out from under her feet. Her brother Matteo Bassino's wife died completely unexpectedly in her sleep. A tragedy that deeply shocked the reigning Super-G world champion.

Emotional words In an Instagram posting, Bassino gave free rein to her feelings. “Sometimes the past is too strong to let you live the present. Therefore inevitably a year of change, development and processing. You are in all of us.” Emotional words that Marta Bassino addressed to her late sister-in-law – and that deeply touched the ski world. Numerous colleagues commented on the posting and encouraged Bassino.
