Martina Peterlini: The Trentino native with a soft spot for South Tyrol

She is a phenomenon not only on but also off the piste, knows how to put herself in the spotlight and entertains over 15.000 followers on social networks with her friendly, sincere manner. Above all, Martina Peterlini is blessed with a skiing talent that could soon take her to the top of the world.

The 22-year-old, who impresses with her straightforward South Tyrolean dialect, was already on skis when she was two years old. No wonder, since she comes from a family of ski instructors. “I was born with snow in my blood,” says Peterlini, who “immediately fell in love with skiing.” The right decision once In order to turn her passion into a career, she decided to attend the sports high school in Mals, which has already produced stars such as Dominik Paris and Dorothea Wierer. “In my opinion it is the best high school because on the one hand it guarantees a very good academic education and at the same time proven trainers accompany the athletes and constantly improve them,” says Peterlini. The nearby ski areas also encouraged her in her decision. These are “a paradise” for every skier.

The slalom specialist still returns to Mals to work on her physique with fitness trainer Monika Müller. Looking back, Peterlini says that her time in Mals was “her best years”. She came as a diamond in the rough, was polished and made into the athlete she is today. Membership of the police group (Fiamme Oro), to which Peterlini is “infinitely” grateful, also contributes to this.

The Trentino native achieved her final breakthrough this season: with the high number 47, she managed to qualify for the second round in Levi. “When I swerved at the finish and saw that I was 18th, I was extremely happy,” says Peterlini, who lost eight places in the second run due to nervousness. Nevertheless, this result gave her a lot of self-confidence and showed that she can also compete in the World Cup.

It became clear in Zagreb that she can not only hold her own, but also has what it takes to be at the forefront. With a fantastic second run, she raced up to 14th place - with the sixth-best running time. In the meantime she even sat in the “hot seat” of the leaders. “Without a doubt, that was the best moment of the season,” emphasizes Peterlini, who earned a permanent place for the coming World Cup season thanks to strong results in the European Cup (2 wins). In this she wants to improve further, perhaps break into the top 15. Because she's already starting in the top 30 at the first slalom of the new winter, she's absolutely capable of doing that. “There is still a lot of room for improvement,” she says.

On her way there, however, she has to do without Heini Pfitscher, who last looked after her and the slalom team. The trainer from Truden moves to Switzerland for the new season . “When I received the news I was sorry. I have a very good relationship with Heini. He gave important tips and found the right words at the right time,” says Peterlini, expressing her regret. Studies in Bruneck In times of the coronavirus, when skiing is out of the question, Peterlini has two training sessions per day on the program. Now she also has the chance to devote herself to her studies. “I'm studying tourism and management in Bruneck, but I've only passed four exams in three years. There is simply not enough time left for it,” says Peterlini. She therefore wants to catch up on the learning material during her non-skiing time.
