Now the speed ladies are also entering the big stage.

Seven races have already been held in the women's Ski World Cup: four giant slaloms and three slaloms. This weekend it's the speed skiers' turn, as they kick off their season in St. Moritz.

The races in the Engadine are traditionally the first speed races on European soil. On Tuesday, the Italian Winter Sports Federation nominated eleven athletes, including four from South Tyrol, for two downhills and one Super-G at the 2017 World Championship venue. The team is led by Sofia Goggia, who has already stood atop the podium three times in St. Moritz and achieved a total of seven podium finishes.

Nicol and Nadia Delago, as well as Vicky Bernardi and Sara Thaler, will represent South Tyrol. However, it remains to be seen whether Bernardi and Thaler will be allowed to start in all three races. This is because Italy can only field nine athletes across both disciplines – although Sara Allemand has an additional guaranteed spot in the Super-G thanks to her European Cup results from last year. It is expected that Bernardi and Thaler will compete for two of the nine starting places in the downhill, along with Allemand and Carlotta De Leonardis. In the Super-G, however, only one athlete will have to sit out. The team is completed by Elena Curtoni, Roberta Melesi, Laura Pirovano, and Asja Zenere.

Delagos want to be among the top contenders.

St. Moritz has always been a lucky place for Italian and South Tyrolean skiers. Besides Goggia, the still-injured Federica Brignone, and Curtoni, Karen Putzer and Isolde Kostner have also celebrated victories there. Putzer won the Super-G in 1999 and 2001, while Kostner won the downhill in 1999. The Delago sisters have yet to find their footing on the technically demanding Corviglia slope: Nicol's best result is 15th place, and Nadia has never finished higher than 26th. But this weekend, they hope to break through.
