“Scary moment”: ski ace with a large guardian angel

A Super-G of the European Cup was on the program in Orcières Merlette, France, on Wednesday. There was a moment of shock. Joan Verdu (39) jumped onto the track with the number 25. The skier from Andorra (13 World Cup starts) was doing well, skiing with full concentration - and then missed a crash. After a long curve, a piste worker suddenly appeared on the route. Verdu and the helper escaped the collision by just a few centimeters - a shocking moment that the skier handled surprisingly well. At the finish he achieved a solid 11th place. How could something like this happen? The runner in front of Verdu - Federico Simoni from Italy - fell during his run. Since the start intervals are very short, Verdu was already on the way when Simoni fell - this was apparently missed by the piste worker who wanted to get the route back in shape. Luckily, Verdu escaped the fright, but wrote on social media: “11. Place today on the descent after a scary moment. I’m glad I got through without a fall and happy with the result.” How brutal such a collision can be became clear in 2002: The Swiss Werner Elmer crashed into a piste worker and lost his life at the age of just 20. A few months earlier, 31-year-old Frenchwoman Regine Cavagnoud suffered the same fate when she collided with a trainer during downhill training and succumbed to serious injuries shortly afterwards.
