Worst balance sheet in 38 years: ÖSV in crisis

Vincent Kriechmayr finished the overall World Cup in fifth place behind the points record-setting Odermatt (2.042) and the Norwegians Aleksander Aamodt Kilde, Henrik Kristoffersen and Lucas Braathen. Neo-all-rounder Marco Schwarz, who competed in 30 of 38 races this season, came seventh.

When it comes to women, you have to look far down in the ranking; Cornelia Hütter is the best Austrian in 14th place. Shiffrin scored almost 1.000 more points than her first pursuer Lara Gut-Behrami from Switzerland. Odermatt and Shiffrin each won with the second largest lead in history. The overall victory went to Switzerland ahead of Austria and Norway, in the women's category Switzerland won ahead of Italy and Austria, and in the men's category Switzerland won ahead of Norway and Austria.

A look at the winners' lists shows that eleven athletes from just four nations - 18 victories Switzerland, 14 Norway, 5 Austria, 1 France - registered for the men's competition. Marco Odermatt was the high flyer with 13 successes. Speed team leader Kriechmayr was successful for the ÖSV four times (downhill each time) and Schwarz once (giant slalom). In the women's race there were daily victories for runners from ten nations, Mikaela Shiffrin shone with 14 triumphs. Cornelia Hütter and Nina Ortlieb each won a Super-G.

ÖSV men's racing director Marko Pfeifer spoke of a “challenging season” and Max Franz's serious injury in November left its mark. And shortly before the turn of the year, Matthias Mayer surprisingly ended his career. “Despite four wins, Kriechmayr didn’t win the ball because Kilde was too consistent. Kilde dominates in the downhill, Odermatt in the super-G and giant slalom. “It didn’t go that way in the slalom, there were a few things that weren’t on our side,” said Pfeifer.
