Bad Bormio crash: How Gino Caviezel is doing

Swiss veteran Gino Caviezel suffered a serious fall in the Super-G in Bormio on Sunday. Now there is an initial diagnosis.

The races in Bormio are certainly among the most spectacular that the Ski World Cup has to offer - but also the most dangerous. This has become clear once again in the past few days. Cyprien Sarrazin had to undergo head surgery after his crash during training and was in a coma, The Italian Pietro Zazzi broke his tibia and fibula, Josua Mettler suffered cruciate ligament tears in both knees. And as if that wasn't enough, another prominent name, Gino Caviezel, was hit in the Super-G on Sunday.

The Swiss rider fell at a speed of almost 100 km/h and slid down the slope. Caviezel’s screams of pain could be heard on TV. The three-time podium finisher had to be treated by paramedics for several minutes before being taken to hospital by helicopter. In the evening, the Swiss Ski Association made an initial diagnosis public.

Initial examinations have shown that Caviezel injured his shoulder and knee. The dislocated shoulder has already been put back in place, but the knee is a cause for concern. The Swiss athlete sustained a "complex injury" there. This is being investigated further, wrote Swiss-Ski. It remains to be seen whether Caviezel will be able to compete in races this winter.
