Shiffrin & Kilde in love: This is how the great ski romance came about

“And then it just happens. That’s life, isn’t it?” Aleksander Aamodt Kilde seems happy at the moment. After tearing his cruciate ligament, he is getting closer and closer to his peak physical shape and in his private life things are going like clockwork: At the end of May it became known that he and superstar Mikaela Shiffrin were a couple. The new dream couple in the ski circus was born .

“We have known each other for almost six years. There was always something between us in a certain way, but it only started sparking now,” says Kilde to the Norwegian newspaper Verdens Gang . The two became closer during difficult phases in their lives. In January of this year, Kilde tore her cruciate ligament and Shiffrin wasn't quite back to her old self after her father's death in February 2020. Coming together in difficult times “We chatted back and forth a bit and she was very supportive. Mikaela had a great season, but had not yet fully come to terms with her father's death. So we were our own sparring partners, giving each other something and taking something at the same time,” says Kilde, who adds: “That’s strange. When something bad happens, something good often comes out.”

Shiffrin and Kilde were already training together on the beach.

Shiffrin has always supported the injured Kilde with advice and support over the last few months. “She also had a knee injury before. Her father was also a very good anesthesiologist who knew a lot. She helped me with tips and tricks about the cruciate ligament. That did me a lot of good,” the Norwegian sent warm words to his new girlfriend. Like living the same life At the same time, Kilde admits that he underestimated how famous Shiffrin really is. “In the USA she is a superstar. When it became official, I received countless phone calls and messages. But I had fun with it.” Why did you dare to go public? “We talked about it a lot and decided now, before the season, was a good time to make it official. Otherwise there would have been only rumors.”

Kilde believes the two fit together so well because they are top athletes. “We both know what makes a skier tick and where the focus lies. And when we are together we can have a good time and train together. It’s a bit like living the same life.”
