Ski retirement at the sickbed: "I will miss you"

While the World Championships, the highlight of the season, are taking place in Saalbach-Hinterglemm these days, far away from the major event there was a sad retirement to announce.

Alpine skiing is one of the most fascinating sports in the world - but unfortunately also one of the most dangerous. It is not unusual for an injury to cost a skiing ace her career. Now it has happened to a young American woman who, at the tender age of 23, emotionally announced the end of her career from her sickbed.

Allie Resnick may not be a household name in the wider skiing world, but she was in a World Cup starting house nine times between 2020 and 2023, and the technical specialist also finished 14th in the European Cup. But now she has drawn a line under it. Lying on her hospital bed with her left knee heavily bandaged, Resnick announced her retirement.

"This is not the ending I dreamed of. But I couldn't be more grateful for everything I've experienced. Little Allie would be proud of me," said the American, who is now starting a new life. "Thank you, skiing, for the lifelong friendships, the memories, and for making me the person I am today. I will miss you more than words can ever describe."

Shiffrin & Co. say goodbye

Numerous friends from the US ski team commented on the post, including superstar Mikaela Shiffrin (“The best is yet to come”), Nina O'Brien (“Skiing won't be the same without you”) and the newly crowned giant slalom medalist Paula Moltzan ("I'm proud of you").
