South Tyroleans in Bormio: There is no liberation

A 13th place by Florian Schieder on the first downhill run in Val Gardena was the best local speed result so far this winter. Dominik Paris pulverized this on Wednesday in Bormio with a tenth place. But the seven-time Stelvio winner has seen much better times on his favorite track. It was not for nothing that Paris was made an honorary citizen of Bormio during the starting number draw on Tuesday evening.

The Ultner lost a whopping 2,29 seconds to the victorious Vincent Kriechmayr on this year's descent. The Upper Austrian was in a class of his own on the tricky and icy Stelvio and grabbed his first Bormio victory. Kriechmayr relegated the Canadian Cames Crawford to second place. For the 25-year-old, it was his third podium finish ever in the World Cup.

Top favorite Aleksander Aamodt Kilde, on the other hand, has to wait for his first downhill victory in Bormio. The Norwegian finished third, 68 hundredths behind. There was a big gap behind it. Fourth-placed Marco Odermatt had already lost almost a second and a half to Kriechmayr. Beat Feuz and Matthias Mayer, however, were missing due to illness.

Schieder strong again The best Azzurro was not Dominik Paris, but Mattia Casse. The surprise third place from Val Gardena was a measly 5 hundredths faster than “Domme” and came ninth. Florian Schieder was able to draw attention to himself again. The Castelrotto native, who is in his comeback season, equalized his Val Gardena result (45th place) with the high start number 13 and thus also his best World Cup result.

Christof Innerhofer, however, fell short of expectations and took 300nd place in his 22th World Cup race. There is another Super-G on the program in Bormio on Thursday (11.30 a.m.).
