The pairing couldn't have been more high-profile: Since the summer of 2025, Aksel Lund Svindal had been coaching Lindsey Vonn. Two Olympic champions, world champions, overall World Cup winners, and icons of the sport were working together – with the 2026 Olympic Games as their final major goal. It was there, of all places, that the dream of a sensational gold medal was brutally shattered: In a serious crash during the Olympic downhill, she suffered a complex fracture of her tibia.
The question of the future now arises. not only Vonn himself, but also at Svindal. In an interview with the Norwegian daily newspaper VG The Norwegian offered a glimpse into his plans. "It's probably over. Unfortunately, she now needs more physiotherapists and doctors than ski coaches," the 43-year-old said.
Is Svindal joining a ski team?
The two-time Olympic champion doesn't necessarily have to disappear from the scene entirely. "Several foreign teams have asked if a job elsewhere would be of interest," he said, referring to a possible stint with a national team. He added that he is also in contact with the Norwegian speed team. "Many are exploring options right now, which is perfectly natural. More will probably become clearer over the course of the spring," he explained.Aksel Lund Svindal and Lindsey Vonn at the World Cup in St. Moritz. © APA/afp / FABRICE COFFRINI
However, potential suitors will have to do some serious convincing. "At the same time, I also know that I hadn't actually planned to work as a coach this winter," Svindal continued. "It was incredibly fun, but it was also exactly as I had imagined: a travel burden that isn't easy to reconcile with family life." The time limit on the collaboration with Vonn, which was in place from the beginning, was therefore ideal.
For Svindal, however, family will be the main focus in the coming weeks. "I'm looking forward to spending more time with my son," he said, referring to his two-year-old. Meanwhile, the rumor mill is likely to continue churning.
