From Zermatt to Levi: This is what Ski Saturday brings

This weekend the new ski season is picking up speed. The World Cups in Zermatt-Cervinia and Levi are on the program. However, there is a big question mark.

The men can get their first World Cup points this Saturday with a new downhill run in the shadow of the Matterhorn. The organizers and the world association Fis hope that the event, which starts in Switzerland and finishes in Italy, will be a spectacle. However, it is unclear whether it will be possible to drive: two training sessions had to be canceled due to heavy fresh snow, and precipitation and wind are also forecast on race days. The start is scheduled for 11.30 a.m.

A total of eight Azzurri have been nominated for Saturday's departure. Including the three South Tyroleans Dominik Paris (start number 6), Florian Schieder (10) and Christof Innerhofer (25). The top favorites around Vincent Kriechmayr, Aleksander Aamodt Kilde and Marco Odermatt come with numbers 11, 13 and 14.

Ladies in Levi

While the men are hoping for luck with the weather, the women are taking part in a slalom in Levi, Finland (10.00 a.m./13.00 p.m.). From a South Tyrolean perspective, this is the only thing Vera Tschurtschenthaler included. She comes with start number 55.

Mikaela Shiffrin and Petra Vlhova have dominated the slalom events in Levi for a decade. The American has now achieved six victories in the Far North, including two in 2022. The Slovakian has triumphed five times, including doubles in 2020 and 2021. Shiffrin gave the all-clear after a training fall, saying she had escaped with a bone bruise and was ready for Levi.
