What's behind Goggia's series of falls?

Many experts agreed at the beginning of the season: Under the leadership of neo-coach Luca Agazzi, the daredevil from Bergamo has gained a lot of stability. In the first races in Lake Louise (Canada) and St. Moritz (Switzerland) she drove unusually calmly, almost reserved. She was still fast and won three of four runs - the last of which with a broken hand. What followed was a break of around a month until the next races in St. Anton. A break that interrupted the rhythm of the race and unsettled Goggia.

In St. Anton she fell after the best time and had to skip the Super-G 24 hours later as a precaution. A week later she returned to winning ways with a success in Cortina, before she took off violently in the lower section the next day. Again she was unable to compete in the following Super-G. Instead, she flew to Dubai for a short trip. When she came back and prepared for the World Cup at the San Pellegrino Pass, the next mishap happened. She cut her skis, flew spectacularly through the air and, miraculously, remained uninjured. She wrote the next chapter in the World Cup downhill when she even threaded. On Friday she was at First training in Crans Montana then back in the fences.

A recurring image Many are now wondering what led to this incredible series of falls. The protagonist herself has no explanation: “I have to watch the video to see what exactly happened,” she said on Friday. She had already given a similar answer at the World Cup race.

What is worrying are the parallels to the last few seasons: She had also dominated the event last year until she had a serious fall in Altenmarkt-Zauchensee and Cortina after the turn of the year. In 2021 she was also injured in January - shortly before the start of the home World Cup in Cortina. In 2020, a broken arm in Garmisch-Partenkirchen put an end to her season at the beginning of February.

It is unclear what the reasons for these mishaps in the second half of the season are. What is certain, however, is that the Italian will not let this influence her. It's not for nothing that she came back stronger after every injury - and now has an impressive 21 World Cup victories. In Crans Montana she also has a big goal in mind: she wants to ensure a preliminary decision in the fight for the small downhill ball. It would be her fourth, third in a row.
