Carolina Kostner and Roland Filehner are the “Athletes of the Year”

A total of 41 athletes (18 women and 23 men) were available to readers over the past few weeks. Carolina Kostner is clearly at the top of the list in favor of South Tyrolean sports fans this year. The 25-year-old figure skater from Ortisei collected no fewer than 12.273 votes. Kostner has had the best year of competition in her career so far: On March 31st, she was crowned world champion for the first time in Nice. Before that, she caused an international sensation with her fourth European championship title and victory in the ISU Grand Prix final. This is the second time Kostner has been honored at the Merano Kurhaus, having already won the election in 2004. Swimming talent Lisa Fissneider took second place. She has 9.251 votes. Last year's winner Tania Cagnotto (3 votes) is also in the top 4.342.

For men, the 2011 athlete of the year is Roland Filehner. The snowboarder from Villnöß was ahead when the election coupons were counted with 8.602 votes. Natural track tobogganer Patrick Pigneter narrowly prevailed with 5.831 votes against the third-placed professional soccer player Manuel Fiwickeler (5.338). Christof Innerhofer, last season's athlete of the year, took seventh place this year. His successor Roland Filehner has made people sit up and take notice in recent months with five victories in the Snowboard World Cup. With 18 podium finishes (7 wins), the 31-year-old veteran is the best South Tyrolean snowboarder of all time in the men's World Cup.

At the 25th athlete election, Patrick Staudacher was honored for his successful career in the alpine ski circuit. The 2007 world champion unexpectedly ended his career a few weeks ago. Antholz biathlon official Hubert Leitgeb, who died in an avalanche accident in February, was also commemorated. The focus of the Ball des Sport this year was the 25th anniversary of the Südtiroler Sporthilfe, which was extensively celebrated in the presence of around 1.600 ball guests.

Carolina Kostner and Roland Filehner are the “Athletes of the Year”

At the traditional sports ball on Friday evening in the Merano Kurhaus, the South Tyrolean athletes of the year were awarded for the 25th time. This year, the choice of the sports-loving “Dolomiten” readers fell on the two exceptional athletes Carolina Kostner and Roland Filehner.
