South Tyrol's veterans: Furious double victory in Carezza

This Roland Fischnaller is a devil of a guy: The 45-year-old secured victory at the home World Cup in Carezza on Thursday – and ahead of a teammate.

Roland Fischnaller and Aaron March are like a fine red wine: they only get better with age. The 45-year-old Fischnaller won the parallel giant slalom ahead of the 39-year-old March. Another Italian, Mirko Felicetti, finished third. This was Italy's first triple victory since Rogla in February 2023.

What happened to the other South Tyroleans at their home race on the Karerpass? Edwin Coratti was eliminated in the quarterfinals, while Daniele Bagozza and Gabriel Messner had to bow out in the round of 16. Marc Hofer, Tommy Rabanser, and Fabian Lantschner were knocked out in the morning's qualifying round.

Fish buckles, incredible

March had already triumphed in Cortina on Saturday and has now virtually secured his Olympic ticket – just like Fischnaller: The skier from Villnöss injured his ankle just before the start of the season and made a strong comeback with a fifth-place finish. On Thursday, Fischnaller went one better, securing his third victory overall in Carezza – his first in eleven years.

Im großen Finale ließ „Fisch“ seinen langjährigen Weggefährten March um insgesamt 13 Hundertstelsekunden hinter sich. „Das könnte mein letztes Rennen in Carezza gewesen sein“, so ein strahlender Fischnaller nach seinem 24. Weltcupsieg im Ziel. Der Villnößer hat wieder einmal gezeigt, aus welchem Holz er geschnitzt ist. Für March war es der erste Podestplatz in Carezza überhaupt.

„Ich bin sehr stolz darauf, vor meiner Familie und meinen Kindern gewonnen zu haben, und das ist für mich das Wichtigste“, erklärte der siegreiche Fischnaller im Anschluss. „Ich bin sehr zufrieden. Bisher gehörte diese Piste nicht zu meinen Lieblingsstrecken. Das Finale ist sehr gut gelaufen und ich bin wirklich glücklich, hier in Carezza auf dem Podium zu stehen“, sagte March.

Jasmin Coratti is eliminated in the round of 16

In the women's competition, last year's winner Jasmin Coratti was eliminated in the round of 16 this year. The athlete from Vinschgau lost to her teammate Luca Dalmasso. The victory went to Austrian Sabine Payer. The snowboarders' next competition is on Saturday, when a parallel slalom is scheduled in Davos, Switzerland.
