The Slovenian club HK Celje will no longer be represented in the multinational Alps Hockey League next season. The Celje-based club joined the league only two years ago, but has had limited success in terms of competitiveness.
Even more serious than its sporting record, however, are the club's financial problems. According to consistent media reports, HK Celje has accumulated debts totaling approximately €200.000. Withdrawal from the Alps Hockey League thus seems inevitable, although an official statement from the league has yet to be made.
As of now, 13 teams will participate in the AlpsHL next season. These include HC Gröden, HC Meran, the Unterland Cavaliers, the Wipptal Broncos, the Rittner Buam, and Asiago Hockey, which is returning.
