Brescia's chaotic relegation is getting closer

The signs point to Serie C: Brescia received a heavy blow on Thursday regarding their chance of staying in Serie B.

Such stories only happen in Italian football. The Serie B championship ended almost three weeks ago, and yet there could still be a change in the standings. Brescia managed to avoid relegation on paper, but just days after the championship ended, they came under legal scrutiny. Due to financial irregularities, the traditional club faces a four-point deduction – which is tantamount to relegation to Serie C.

This relegation is looming ever closer. On Thursday, the sports court of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) confirmed, as expected, the four-point deduction for Brescia. The Lombard club can and will now appeal to the Court of Appeal, where the case will be heard on June 10 or 12. If the appeal is rejected, the club will still have the final option of appealing to the CONI court.

New chance for Sampdoria?

The whole story is also curious because two other clubs depend on Brescia's fate. Sampdoria has been relegated to Serie C, but would advance to a play-off place if Brescia were penalized. Salernitana is waiting there, while Frosinone (currently the second playoff participant) would be saved. The relegation matches are scheduled to take place on June 15 and 20 – about a month after the end of the regular season.
