Cesena dominates, but FC Südtirol saves a point

FC Südtirol failed to secure the victory they had hoped for on Saturday. However, the White and Reds did at least collect a valuable point in their home game against Cesena.

After a very poor 0-2 loss against Mantova, Fabrizio Castori's men were looking to make amends. The omens were good, as their opponents, Cesena, had gone three consecutive matches without a win. Furthermore, FCS 2025 is still unbeaten at home. The packed Drusus Stadium, which also included around 600 away fans, proved to be an impregnable fortress on this day – even if the White and Reds ultimately "only" took home a point. The teams parted ways in a 1-1 draw.

A glance at the statistics is enough to know how this match unfolded. Cesena had 90 percent (!) possession over the 76 minutes. The visitors struggled for a long time to break down the defense of the White and Reds. However, the longer the game went on, the more the FCS defense faltered. Given this, Castori must be happy with the draw. Niklas Phyythiä's opening goal (27th minute) didn't give the home side the wit that the FCS fans hoped for from their players.

With rivals Brescia and Cittadella also winless, FC Südtirol defended its 14th place in the table. However, their lead over a play-off spot remains just one point. The match against stragglers Salernitana next Saturday (15 p.m.) takes on even greater significance after this draw.

The highlights

Nothing going on in BolzanoThe first 25 minutes were characterized by a lot of boredom and not a single chance of scoring. Cesena mostly had the ball, but knew precious little about what to do with it. Castori's team huddled at the back, waiting for a counterattack.
It can happen so quicklyCesena's attention is briefly lost, and Phyythiä sends the evading Raphael Odogwu through on goal, who uses a feint to draw goalkeeper Jonathan Klinsmann out of position. The ball is free in the penalty area and is fired over the line by Phyythiä.
Deserved compensationAfter falling behind, Cesena increased the pressure, pinned FCS in their own half, and equalized. Elayis Tavsan was given too much space after a corner and curled the ball into the top corner with perfect precision.
Casiraghi too playfulSubstitute Daniele Casiraghi had the best chance to score the winning goal, but his cross after a quick counterattack failed to find a home.
