This news has caused quite a stir: Serie B club Brescia is to be deducted four points due to financial irregularities (involving proof of payment of wages and a dubious €1,4 million loan). This ruling is expected to be confirmed by the sports tribunal of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) next Thursday. In addition, the team will be given a further four points for the coming season. The club has already completed its court hearing.
The ruling would relegate Brescia—they were the first Serie B club to be saved—to Serie C. But the story doesn't end there, of course. Brescia will appeal the ruling. Should this court also rule negatively, Brescia will have another appeal before the CONI court. Therefore, a quick resolution to the case is not in sight.
The sporting impact
The play-off duel between Salernitana and Frosinone is currently suspended. If Brescia does end up being relegated, Frosinone would be saved. Salernitana will have to enter the play-offs either way, but their opponents would be different if Brescia were relegated. Instead of fighting for survival against Frosinone, the Campania side would have to face Sampdoria. For the traditional Genoa club, it would be an unexpected opportunity to avoid their first relegation to the third division. Sampdoria has already announced that they are currently prepared for both scenarios.
