Obermais captain speaks plainly: "Those are excuses"

FC Obermais is suffering from a glaring away form in Serie D. Captain Martin Ciaghi has addressed the issue – and refuses to accept any excuses.

FC Obermais has played eight away games this season, managing a meager single point. Far too little for the South Tyrolean side, who have collected ten points from seven home matches. "At home, the Lahn River gives us that certain something extra. But if we want to avoid relegation, we absolutely have to manage to take something away from home as well," says Martin Ciaghi bluntly. Obermais will be playing away again next Sunday (this time in Conegliano).

On Sunday there was around Unione La Rocca Altavilla suffered another 1:2 defeat. Ciaghi can't explain why Obermais struggles so much away from home. "It's difficult to explain. We ask ourselves why we're not succeeding." Ciaghi vehemently denies that the long bus journeys Obermais undertakes on match days play a role: "Those are just excuses, and we don't want to hide behind them. It's up to us to change this trend."

Ciaghi has fought his way back into the starting eleven in recent weeks, wresting the starting spot from Vienna's Armand Srmcka. How does the Obermais stalwart feel about his team's first-ever adventure in Serie D? "The difference to the Oberliga is enormous, especially tactically and physically. In terms of playing ability, I would have expected a bit more, although here too the difference is significant. Many teams have players who have played at a higher level. That makes a difference in terms of quality and experience."
