Chievo Verona is a recognizable name in Italian football. Although the club has always been overshadowed by its great local rivals Hellas Verona, Chievo has been a fixture in Italian professional football for the past 20 years. Its existence came to an end in 2021 after financial problems prevented it from obtaining a license and thus from competing in Serie B.
The club was completely dissolved and re-founded – albeit indirectly. Chievo icon Sergio Pellissier founded the successor club, FC Clivense. Due to a lack of naming rights, he was no longer allowed to call the club Chievo Verona. The 459-time Serie A capped player rectified this a year ago when he acquired the naming rights for around €300.000, giving Chievo a second lease of life.
The current Chievo is dripping with memories
But it's not just the name that harks back to glory days. Fabrizio Cacciatore, who has made over 100 appearances for Chievo, has been on the sidelines since this summer. In attack, Alberto Paloschi, a professional who played 143 times for Chievo Verona in Serie A – scoring 43 goals – was signed. So, the current Chievo has a lot in common with its former club.Coach with a strong sense of style: Fabrizio Cacciatore.
Another well-known name in Chievo's attack is that of Rocco Costantino. FCS fans, in particular, will remember the charismatic striker, who scored 2019 goals in 2020 matches for the White and Reds between July 24 and December 63. He, too, joined the team this summer. The club also enjoys support from the city, where former Italian international Damiano Tommasi is now mayor. However, he didn't play for Chievo during his career, but for city rivals Hellas Verona. The new Chievo will begin its second Serie D season this year. Last year, the team finished seventh. For Obermais, the encounter with the Verona team will not only be a sporting highlight, but also a real test before the championship opener against Este in ten days.
