Coach Stefan Kenesei's team once again put on a good show against Paris in front of 3.004 fans at the Franz Horr Stadium—a record crowd for a home game for the "violet" women. Their committed performance ultimately wasn't enough for Elisa Pfattner and Co.
The favored French took control from the start, but the Austrians held their own. Courtney Strode had a good opportunity, but her shot was headed away by Fiona Liaigre (25'). Austria goalkeeper Jasmin Pal shone with a brilliant save from Maelle Garbino (42'). In the 55th minute, the hosts celebrated after Katharina Schiechtl appeared to have scored a goal. However, referee Ewa Augustyn of Poland called a foul – and it was unclear whether the ball had even crossed the line.
Clara Mateo finally clinched the victory for the Parisians. Following an Austria corner, the visitors countered swiftly, and Mateo fired home from a tight angle (67'). The 27-year-old added another goal shortly afterward with a stunning goal (73'). The Viennese team now advances to the second qualifying round of the new Women's European Cup.
