Football stadium to bear the Pope's name

The Argentine football club San Lorenzo wants to name a new stadium after the late Pope Francis.

Last year, club president Marcelo Moretti personally obtained Pope Francis's approval for the project. Pope Francis was a huge football fan and a member of the Buenos Aires-based club.

"During this visit, I brought him many gifts from the club and asked for his permission to name the new stadium we are building in the Boedo district after 'Pope Francis.' He agreed and was visibly moved," Moretti reported in an open letter published in the sports newspaper "Marca."

Moretti also announced that the club would wear special jerseys in honor of the Pope at its next home game on Saturday against Rosario Central.
