The club had previously parted ways with previous coach Bruno Lage the night before following the embarrassing 2:3 defeat in the Champions League against FK Karabakh Agdam.
According to consistent media reports, Mourinho is said to have already given his approval in the hours that followed. He finally landed in Lisbon early Wednesday evening to sign the contract. For the 62-year-old, it's a return to a former stomping ground. He had already coached Benfica for a short time in 2000, following the departure of then-coach Jupp Heynckes.
Mourinho to lead Benfica back to the championship
"I'm hungrier than I was 25 years ago," Mourinho said at his first press conference in Lisbon. "I'm extremely happy to be here. I feel a great responsibility. And I feel more alive than ever." Retirement hasn't been an issue at all, the coach emphasized: "I won't end my career until I feel something has changed."Josè Mourinho with Benfica president Rui Costa. © APA/afp / PATRICIA DE MELO MOREIRA
Mourinho most recently worked for Fenerbahçe. After losing to Benfica in the Champions League playoffs, the Turkish club recently released him. The title-winner is now tasked with leading Benfica to their first title since 2023.Edit Profile
