Sporting are champions early

Sporting Lisbon secured the Portuguese championship surprisingly early.

Thanks to an unexpected 0-2 defeat by Benfica Lisbon at FC Famalicão on Sunday evening, Sporting have been confirmed as the new champions ahead of schedule.

With two games still to play, coach Ruben Amorim's team can no longer be caught with an eight-point lead over city rivals Benfica.

For Benfica and the German coach Roger Schmidt, who is repeatedly associated with FC Bayern, an overall disappointing season ends without a major title.
