Liverpool FC suffered their first defeat in the Champions League a few days after their 2-1 loss at Crystal Palace in the Premier League. In addition, Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson and Hugo Ekitiké were substituted due to injury.

No points for Mourinho at his former club

José Mourinho's Benfica Lisbon earned applause on his return to Stamford Bridge with Chelsea, but they failed to pick up any points in a 1-0 defeat. Tottenham Hotspur, also Mourinho's former club, could only manage a 2-2 draw at Champions League newcomers FK Bodø/Glimt. Jens Petter Hauge scored twice for the Norwegians (53' and 66').
