Argentina mourns a world champion

South American football legend Luis Galván has died. The Argentinean was 77 years old.

Both the Argentine Football Association and his longtime club, Atlético Talleres from Córdoba, expressed their condolences to the family of the defender, who won the World Cup on home soil as a regular starter in 1978. Argentina defeated the Netherlands 3-1 after extra time in the final.


Fans in Cordoba will have an opportunity to mourn on Tuesday, the club said.

No information on the cause of death was available. According to media reports, Luis El Negro Galván, his full name, was recently hospitalized with pneumonia. He made 34 appearances for Argentina and, according to the Argentine Football Association, is Talleres' record player with 503 appearances in 17 seasons.
