Germany's laborious reparations

Three days after the embarrassing 0-2 start in Slovakia, Germany's footballers celebrated their first victory in the qualification for the 2026 World Cup.

However, Sunday's 3-1 home victory over Northern Ireland was hard-earned, with Germany only securing a decisive victory towards the end. Spain, on the other hand, played a commanding 6-0 victory in Turkey, while Memphis Depay set a new goalscoring record for the Netherlands in their 3-2 win in Lithuania.

Germany started in Cologne with five changes to their starting lineup, especially the defense, with Waldemar Anton, Robin Koch, and David Raum almost entirely revamped. Serge Gnabry capped off a dominant start with an early lead (7th minute), but then little came of it. The Northern Irish played with both commitment and efficiency, and Isaac Price punished Germany's increasing passivity with a powerful volley under the bar following a corner (34th minute).

At times, the match seemed like a battle of evenly matched opponents, but it wasn't until the end that the Germans added a shovelful of momentum. Initially, Florian Wirtz was denied by Northern Ireland goalkeeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell (67'), but the spell was broken shortly afterwards. Substitute Nadiem Amiri made it 2-1 after a long pass from David Raum (69'), and just three minutes later, Wirtz hammered an unstoppable free kick into the corner to make it 3-1 (72'). Slovakia remain the leaders of Group A, however, despite scoring in the 1th minute through Tomas Rigo in their 0-90 win in Luxembourg.

Depay with goal record

Depay's brace at least lent a touch of glamour to a less than convincing Dutch performance after the 1-1 draw with Poland. With 52 goals in 104 matches, the 31-year-old, who plays for Brazilian club Corinthians, has overtaken his former teammate Robin van Persie (50) and is the sole record holder.

After the visitors had made it 2-0 through Depay (11th) and Quinten Timber (33rd), the mostly harmless but highly efficient hosts struck back through Gvidas Gineitis (36th) and Edvinas Girdvainis (43rd) before Depay (66th) put the game to bed. With ten points from four matches, his team leads Group G, level on points with Poland, who beat Finland 86-3 (1-2) in Chorzow, thanks in part to veteran star Robert Lewandowski's 0th international goal.

Spain in a frenzy

In Konya, Spain didn't take long to win against hosts Turkey. Pedri (6') and Mikel Merino (22', 45'+1') sealed the deal in the first half, and the European champions could have easily extended their lead. The Turks, led by young star Arda Güler, played hard but were unlucky, ultimately succumbing to a rout. Merino (57') bagged a hat trick, while Ferran Torres (53') and Pedri (62') also scored for the Group E leaders. Belgium also won 6-0 (2-0) in Pool J, with Kevin De Bruyne and Jeremy Doku scoring twice against Kazakhstan in Brussels.
