An era ends: Deschamps retires after the World Cup

According to consistent media reports, France's World Cup-winning coach Didier Deschamps will step down as national coach after the 2026 World Cup.

According to reports, the 56-year-old will speak on Wednesday afternoon on French TV channel TF1 His contract expires after the World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico.

This would mark the end of an era in France. Deschamps has been coach of Les Bleus since 2012. He succeeded Laurent Blanc. His greatest success with the Équipe Tricolore was winning the 2018 World Cup in Russia. Recently, however, there has been criticism of the coach and the team.

Deschamps was successful not only as a coach, but also as a player. He won the World Cup in his home country in 1998 and the European Championship two years later. He also won the Champions League twice - once with Olympique Marseille (1993) and once with Juventus (1996).
