Four goals and a yellow-red card: Aubameyang's wild performance

Thanks to a four-goal haul from former Dortmund striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, the Gabon national team has maintained its chances of direct World Cup qualification.

Aubameyang scored all of his team's goals in Nairobi's 4-3 (2-2) victory over Gambia. The 36-year-old, who now plays for Olympique Marseille, also received a second yellow card in the 85th minute of a crazy afternoon of football.

This means Aubameyang will miss the final qualifying match against Burundi. Gabon remains second in its group, one point behind Ivory Coast, who beat bottom-placed Seychelles 7-0 (4-0).

FC Bayern striker Nicolas Jackson and former Munich player Sadio Mané defended their first place in their group ahead of the Democratic Republic of Congo thanks to a 5-0 win in South Sudan. They are two points ahead of their final game against Mauritania. Bayern's new signing Jackson converted a penalty after the hour mark to make it 4-0 and was substituted shortly thereafter. Mané also scored.

28 places left for the World Cup

So far, 20 teams have already qualified for the finals, which will be held for the first time with 48 teams. The three hosts, the USA, Canada, and Mexico, automatically qualify.

Australia, Iran, Japan, Jordan, South Korea, and Uzbekistan have qualified for the Asian qualifying round. Algeria, Egypt, Morocco, and Tunisia are currently represented from Africa. Defending champions Argentina, Brazil, Ecuador, Colombia, Paraguay, and Uruguay are represented from South America. New Zealand has secured its spot in Oceania.
